Every man needs at least one suit in his wardrobe – and if yours needs to be versatile enough to wear to work, parties and special occasions then it’s worth investing in. Here’s how to find the perfect suit for you.

Off the rack: Contrary to popular opinion, you needn’t visit Saville Row to find the perfect suit – nowadays some high street stores offer great off the rack ensembles that will fit most physiques. Try searching for ‘mens suits UK’ at an online store such as Next to get familiar with the choice on offer.  It’s unwise to actually buy a suit online before trying on some shapes and styles to determine which looks best on you.  And remember – you needn’t buy a jacket and trousers in the same size. Mix and match items until you find the combination that works the best.

Bespoke: If you can’t find what you’re looking for on the high street then your other option is to invest in a bespoke suit. The barrier for most people when it comes to having an outfit handmade just for them is price – but if this isn’t an issue for you then a bespoke suit could be a good option. Find a recommended tailor, and always check out the fabric, style and examples of similar finished pieces before handing over the money.

Fabric: Whether you go for bespoke or off the rack, fabric is always important. The best-quality suits are generally made from 100% wool, and tend to breathe effectively as well as looking exceptionally stylish. Non-wools may wrinkle and stain more easily, but if you’re after something for the summer then a linen suit may be more comfortable. Synthetic fabrics such as polyester and spandex are also sometimes mixed with wool to reduce the cost of a suit.

Style: Once you’ve considered fabric and fit, give a thought to the style of suit you’re looking for. Double-breasted jackets are currently highly fashionable, but single-breasted styles may stand the test of time better. Other areas to look at include the cut of the collar, the lapels, the length of the arms and the buttons.
